Tested with 7.10 web start works with no problems with java runtime 6.0 and firefox. Firefox seemed to pick up plugin automatically. about:plugins shows what I have Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_03-b05. 

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

Attempts to use web camera (even those that work on ubuntu) fail with no visible feedback.

(I'll put some here after recalling the specs...)

  • may require trying different usb controllers.
  • may require rmmod ehci-hcd

[edit] Web cameras that I didn't manage to get working

  • Logitech Quickcam Orbit/Sphere
    • Official page suggested to use pwc driver but that didn't help.
    • dmesg shows cannot set freq 16000 to ep 0x86.
    • camera is detected by cameramonitor, but image capture for skype or gqcam fails with read error.
